It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience filled with memories and lessons I’ll never forget.
Working at Disney is one of those “maybe one day” dreams, and I got the chance to live it. My name is Radman and I’m a Bachelor of Computer Science student at BCIT. Last year, I joined Disney’s Cultural Exchange Program, where I worked in the Food & Beverage sector at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. I spent most of my time at Sunset Ranch Market on Sunset Boulevard, serving guests from around the world. Now, I’m excited to share my experience as a program alum and give some insight into what my experience was really like.
Why I Joined as a Computer Science Student
The program started on an exciting note. In the first few days, we got time off and complimentary park tickets. This gave me a chance to make friends, explore the parks, and get a feel for the guest experience—especially since it was my first time visiting.
Then came “Traditions Day” where I found myself surrounded by new cast members from all over the world. Each of us was referred to as a “cast member” instead of an “employee,” and customers were called “guests.” More than just doing our jobs, the focus was to create magical moments in every interaction.
At Sunset Ranch Market, my day-to-day responsibilities included greeting guests, taking orders, and helping prepare food across five different locations. Before starting, I received extensive training in each area, which highlighted how serious Disney’s standards were for delivering an exceptional guest experience.
Positive Takeaways from My Disney Experience
What I gained from this program wasn’t technical, but in many ways, it was even more valuable. First, I strengthened my teamwork skills and improved my communication skills by working with people from diverse backgrounds. I had the opportunity to introduce my international friends and colleagues to both my Iranian roots and my experience living in Canada.

Beyond that, the program showed me how a company can grow as successful as Disney by truly valuing guests’ experiences. Every small detail matters. We were encouraged to create magical moments for guests, like surprising them with free ice cream or helping them enjoy rides without long waits. It was heartwarming to see characters being trained to never be the first to let go of a child’s hug. Seeing that level of care was genuinely eye-opening, especially from a business or marketing perspective.
Things to Consider
Of course, not everything in this program was easy. Being away from family and friends made the first few weeks feel a bit lonely. But this feeling resolved itself after the third week and by the end of the program, I felt so connected to my coworkers and friends that saying goodbye was emotional.
Another challenge was the Florida heat. Even with warnings, I still wasn’t fully ready. Preparing mentally, pacing yourself and staying hydrated are essential.
If you’re considering whether the program is right for you, read into the application details, watch YouTube videos about the program, and consider the travel logistics and your summer availability. Most importantly, reflect on your personal goals and what you hope to gain.
So, Is It Worth It?
Definitely, yes. This program gave me unforgettable memories, meaningful friendships, and boosted my confidence in my soft skills. Experiencing Disney’s unique culture taught me something new every day. This program will challenge and surprise you, but my advice is to stay open and curious to make the most out of it. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience filled with memories and lessons I’ll never forget.
