“Taco Tuesday” – a catchy alliteration that has, for so long, only reminded us to consume tacos once a week.
For too long has our judgement been clouded by such thought. Why limit yourself to only tacos on Tuesdays when you can have tacos all day, every day? What if I told you there are options? What if I pointed you in the direction of gastronomical awesomeness?
Well, fellow foodie, you must look no further. Introducing to you: Tacofino Commissary.
Though it doesn’t look like much from the outside (and yes, it lacks an awning), the interior is extremely modern-looking with large, communal tables, hanging terrariums, mood-setting lights, and a lovely bar with an assortment of alcoholic beverages.
Since its opening, I have been making ritualistic trips down to the East Village neighbourhood to feast on the various tacos available. For starters, and barring any seafood allergies, I highly recommend the Fish (crispy ling cod, cabbage, chipotle mayo, salsa fresca), and/or the Albacore Tuna (soy, sesame, salsa fresca, wakame, ginger, wasabi mayo). Given the size of the tacos, the freshness of the ingredients, and how amazing they taste, they are each worth the $6.
If tacos are not your thing, or you prefer a meat option, there are always burritos. Two of my particular favourites which I can never decide between are the Bean & Cheese (salsa fresca, cabbage, crema, sriracha), and the Chorizo Verde & Cheese (cheddar, cabbage, salsa fresca, crema). Mind you, they are only available during lunch, but for $10 each, you are treating yourself to a savoury and filling experience that will leave your taste buds begging for more. Ever leave a restaurant only to crave what you ate hours later? Tacofino does that to you!
Getting to and from Tacofino Commissary is quite easy if you’re taking transit from the BCIT Burnaby campus. Simply board the 130 Kootenay Loop/Hastings/Cap U bus and head North along Willingdon, then switch over to the 135 Burrard Stn. bus which will take you West down Hastings Street. Tacofino Commissary is located only one block after Nanaimo. Simple, right?
I can assure you that once you check this place out, it’ll be hard to settle for mediocre campus Taco Tuesdays. I know Austin Grill in NE1 is convenient, but if you had time, make a trip out to Tacofino Commissary. It’ll be worth it!
