The BCITSA Silver Pen Award is a $500 cash prize presented to the student contributor, staff member or volunteer at LINK magazine whose writing demonstrated the highest level of quality and community impact throughout the year. This year’s winner, Laina Tanahara (Broadcast and Online Journalism, 2016 Graduate), also served as our Opinion Editor and her impact on the overall editorial quality of the magazine was felt in every issue.
It is no easy task to tackle the difficult and challenging topics on the minds of young people today, but throughout this past year, Laina fearlessly confronted and challenged today’s toughest social issues with courage, respect and tact. It is one thing to simply report on incidents or issues, and a whole other level of audience engagement to unpack them, investigate their causes and impact, and suggest solutions for improving the world around us. This is exactly what Laina aimed to do in every piece she wrote or edited, always going the extra distance to make her work as well-rounded and impactful as possible. Even when her writing veered out of the scope of social commentary, and into the realm of artistic expression and personal narrative, her words always carried the same honesty, courage and poetics that made her such a powerful voice on BCIT campuses this year.
Congratulations Laina, and thank you for setting a model of excellence for future LINK contributors to follow!
