The BCIT Board Games Club has gained popularity among the students and has become one of the most entertaining clubs in a while. But what makes this club different?
What Makes It Unique
So, what makes this club different from the others? I mean, it’s just another board games club where a bunch of people will sit together, trash-talk, eat, and play. However, they also offer a completely unique range of games for Diplomacy players, Magic: The Gathering drafters, Dungeons & Dragons fans, and even Mahjong enthusiasts.
Want to gain more insights? Walk into the club’s meeting this Friday. You don’t have to be a BCIT student or an active club member; it’s free! You can bring your friends and join or leave at any time. Also, you can just rent board games and play with your friends at your convenience. Are you already good at board games and want to flex your skills? Showcase them in tournaments. With this, we can say that Alexander Farlinger, a.k.a. Alex, is continuously striving to make this club as unique as he can.
The Idea Behind the Club
Alex first started the BCIT Board Games Club two years ago. The seeds of the idea for this club were sown in his high school when he joined a board games club and went from being the youngest member to its leader.
“Money shouldn’t be in the way of entertainment” – BCIT Board Games Club
With this motto, he later started the club at BCIT, where everyone meets once a week to play board games. He wants to create a safe and relaxing environment where everyone can have fun and socialize. Let’s dive into Alex’s journey and see what we can learn from his story.
The Creation of the Club
Alex got the passion to play board games from his family. “My parents always supported me,” he says. “Also, they gave me a better perspective towards understanding the life and people more concisely. I just wanted to share this with everyone.”
When he joined the Computer Systems Technology program two years ago, he realized that many students needed a procrastination station. Most of the students spent long hours in front of the screen, even during a “break.” They needed a place offering enjoyment, socializing, and freedom from academic pressure. In his club, anyone can swirl through the fictional worlds of countless board games.
Five Mottos from Alex
1. “Fake it until you make it.” Ever got an outstanding idea in your mind but don’t know where to start? Just give it a try.
2. “Role-playing games create a solid foundation toward leadership skills.”
3. “Focus on your studies, but don’t forget to relax.” You deserve this break.
4. “It’s not how much we give; it’s about how much love we put.” They donate a board game every year just to make a small difference.
5. “Always adhere to the guidelines while maintaining a welcoming and open environment.”
Campus life is the best time to grow through engagement in diverse activities and a commitment to personal growth. Students can cultivate leadership skills, forge meaningful connections, and embark on a journey of self-discovery. I can understand that it becomes really hard to balance all of these things in harmony, which is completely acceptable. Let’s try to apply the lessons imparted by Alex’s visionary leadership and embrace the opportunities that lie ahead.
