Vancouver has a huge range of restaurants that serve up tasty bowls of ramen. From smaller ma and pa eateries, to larger chain restaurants. Naturally, some places would be better than others, or one would develop their own personal preference. That said, this post features my favourite: Marutama Ra-men.
Robson Street is arguably the mecca of ramen restaurants in Vancouver. Walking from Cambie to Denman, there are at least half a dozen restaurants that compete for the noodle and broth crown. Tucked away just off Robson along Bidwell Street, however, is a small Japanese restaurant that serves a unique bowl of noodles to its patrons.
Unlike the traditional ramen broths which consist of pork, miso, or salt, Marutama introduces a “richly-textured cloudy chicken soup” that, some would say, is an acquired taste.
If you are new to Marutama or ramen in general, I strongly suggest ordering the “Marutama Tamago Ra-Men”. For $10.50, this bowl of noodles and soupy goodness is sure to satisfy your hunger and warm you up on any cold, winter day. As shown in the photo above, the ramen comes with chashu (pork slices), onions, sea lettuce (something you must try if you haven’t!), and the tasty egg. Put these ingredients together on one spoon and you’re sure to enjoy the essence of “Umami” to its fullest.
Wait, what? “Tasty egg”? Yes.
The egg found at Marutama is unique and hands-down the best out of every Vancouver ramen joint. Check out the photo below and that’s all the proof I need to convince you to visit.
Pro Tips:
- There is usually a lineup at all hours of the day. Make sure you put your name down on the clipboard as soon as you arrive, and dress according to the weather (because you’ll most likely be waiting outside).
- I suggest visiting with a smaller group. They have one communal table that can accommodate about 10 people, but since the place is usually full, it’ll lead to longer wait times depending on your party size.
- Make time for yourself because they don’t take reservations!
