The #BestWitches campaign is a result of an after-hours social media event image that led to conversations deconstructing racism, sexism, body-shaming, sex-positivity, hypersexualization, fetishization, othering, cultural appropriation, and more.
On October 20, we open up a discussion on celebrating and transforming nightlife, with keynote speaker Mamarudegyal MTHC and workshops from Paperwave and DJ ANGLE. Topics are decolonizing arts and music, electronic music made easy and intersectional Bechdel test. The event is for all ages and takes place from 1:00-6:00 pm at The Pace, 520 Alexander St.
#BestWitches is stemmed from a conversation regarding a venue campaign in 2014 entitled “BadBitch”, which featured a promotional cast of white women in swimsuits, accessorized with guns and masks.
Incidents like these still continue to this day. #BestWitches hopes people will understand the difference between cultural appropriation and cultural appreciation, along with unpacking a harmful ideology that leads to discrimination and human rights abuses.
