#MeToo

illustrations eda aktas The #MeToo movement unofficially began in October 2017 when actor Alyssa Milano tweeted: “If all women who have been sexually harassed or assaulted wrote ‘Me Too’ as a status, we might give people a sense of the magnitude of the problem.” Since then, we’ve seen an avalanche of sexual violence disclosures hit…

Shape of Water: Review

My friend is a huge fan of Guillermo del Toro’s work, especially with the classic Pan’s Labyrinth. So she naturally had really high expectations. I just wanted to see a unique creepy film. Both of us left more than a little bit disappointed. If anything, we actually left laughing; shocked and amused by just how…

Fringe 2017: Soul Samurai

Soul Samurai Written by Qui Nguyen Directed by Nathania Bernabe   Imagine a post-apocalyptic world where Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets mixed racial and sexual romances with some East Van street cred in a New York setting. They film their ambushes and post the edits online for the world to see. To some, the Creep Catchers may seem heroic:…

Dairakudakan- VIDF Review

Gothic Japanese performers. Spirits mourned in blood petals. Chained humanity forever in self-destruction. High brow art I’d been excitedly anticipating, especially with its revered reviews and standing ovations. But on the night of the performance, I found myself deeply disappointed. Amidst the crowd of older Caucasian art connoisseurs, I was probably one of the only…

Kill The Lights- VIDF Review

Kill The Lights, the urban Vancouver-based dance company, showed off their moves, style, and attitude at the International Dance Festival. The group of some fifty dancers thrashed out at Gastown’s Woodward auditorium with locals crowding around. While the dancers were not coordinated throughout the entire performance, the energy they radiated compensated for such. KTL’s style…

Celebrating Women Together

With wrinkled hands, my grandma would grasp my tiny fists as we crossed the street to my elementary school. Every morning she made sure to get me there on time. Even when dementia plagued at her, she could never forget those instances. Lying at her hospital bed, I watched her wrinkled hands bruise from needle…
